Taobao Volumetric Weight: Why Your 300g Kit Ships as 6kg

Oct 22, 2026 · ModelHaul Tools

Short answer: Chinese carriers charge whichever is greater — actual weight or volumetric weight, calculated as length × width × height (cm) ÷ 6000. A 300-gram kit in a 40×30×30 cm box bills as 6 kg of chargeable weight. This single rule explains most "why is my shipping so expensive" complaints from model builders.

The formula, and where the 6000 comes from

chargeable kg = MAX( actual kg, (L x W x H in cm) / 6000 )

The 6000 divisor is the IATA volumetric standard used by most Chinese air lines. Sea freight uses 1000 or 5000 depending on the carrier (a much more forgiving divisor, which is why bulky-but-light goods go by sea). Express lines (DHL/FedEx) use 5000.

For hobby buyers this means: the shipping cost of a model kit is determined by its retail box, not by the plastic inside it.

What it looks like in practice

The PG kit pays 5.5× its actual weight. This is not a trick or a hidden fee — it is stated in every line's tariff — but almost nobody models it before ordering.

The four ways to cut chargeable weight

1. Ask the seller to ship without the retail box

Model kits are the worst offenders because the retail box is mostly air with artwork on it. Many sellers will ship the sprues flat-wrapped if you message them before paying. This is the single largest saving available to hobby buyers — routinely 30-50% of chargeable weight on gunpla.

Trade-off: no box means no resale value and slightly higher risk of bent parts. For builders, not collectors, it is usually worth it.

2. Ask for repack at the warehouse

Most agents offer free or cheap "remove packaging" / "repack" — they discard shoe boxes, inner cartons and bubble wrap before the international leg. On a hobby haul this typically removes 200-400 g of pure packaging, and far more volume on light bulky items.

3. Split by weight density, not by category

Sea freight wins on bulky-and-light (÷1000 divisor, 30-45 days). Air wins on heavy-and-small. Do not send a 600 g tools order by sea just because the headline per-kg rate looks lower — minimum charges and handling fees eat the difference.

4. Buy the rule, not the item

Before you add a fifth kit to a haul, check whether it pushes the parcel into the next chargeable-kg bracket. Sometimes the fifth kit costs more in shipping than it costs in product.

What volumetric weight does NOT change

  • Duty is assessed on declared value, not on weight.
  • Agent fees per parcel are fixed regardless of size.
  • Restricted items are refused on size-independent grounds — a magnet is a magnet.

A worked example

You want one PG kit (¥380, 1.1 kg actual, 60×40×15 box) and four decal sheets (¥15 each, 200 g total).

Shipped as-is:

  • PG kit: 6.0 kg chargeable
  • Decals: 0.2 kg chargeable
  • Total: 6.2 kg chargeable

Repacked together, kit shipped flat:

  • Sprues ~1.1 kg, decals 0.2 kg, one box 45×32×8 → 1.9 kg volumetric
  • Total: 1.9 kg chargeable

That is a 69% reduction in billed weight for the same hobby output.

The two things people get wrong when they try to fix this

1. They compare agents before they compare weights. Agent fees are usually the small number. Chargeable weight is the big one. A 30% cut on weight beats every coupon on the market.

2. They assume the warehouse will repack automatically. It will not. Repack and box removal are request-based at almost every agent — including Superbuy and Fishgoo. You have to ask, and you have to ask before you submit the parcel.

FAQ

Is 6000 always the divisor?\ For most China-origin air lines, yes. Sea uses 1000, express uses 5000. Always check the agent's tariff page — a few specialty lines differ.

Can I argue a weight at the warehouse?\ You can request a re-measure with photos. It rarely moves more than a few hundred grams, but on a large haul it is worth one message.

Does ordering fewer, larger kits reduce cost?\ Usually yes per kit, because you amortize the fixed per-parcel handling. But watch the box size — two PG boxes do not stack into the same volume.
